Lately I have had a hard time finding the time to read and I am jonesing for a good book on tape (cd or audio file). I think I would like to try it out considering how much time I spend in my car. Does anyone have an suggestions on any good books on tape they've heard and really enjoyed?
This audio-book thing is new to me but I'd like to give it a go and start with something good.

Re: Audio Books
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 12:45 AMCheck your library. I know Mt. View has a selection of audio books. You can check it out (hah) without paying.
I commute by train so I can read - I haven't tried them out yet myself. I would imagine it would help improve the recommendations if we knew what kinds of things you like reading. -

Mon, November 7, 2005 - 8:12 AMWell, like I said, this would be my first time giving this a go and I'd like to try something that another person may have enjoyed rather than blindly picking up anything.
I read a bit of everything but I love a lot of classic lit and I'd like to go back and revisit some of my favorites. G. Eliot, Austen, Swift, H. James...
Regardless, I will do as you suggested and check out the library. Thanks. -

Re: Audio Books
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 8:43 AMA word of advice: The content of the book is important but so is the delivery. Make sure you take a look a who's reading the book on the recording. I've found a few real stinkers where the person reading it aloud absolutely turned me off to what was being read.
I just took a plane flight from San Francisco to Portland, Maine and I listened to a pretty decent reading of Kerouac's "On The Road" read by David Carradine. I needed something light to listen to to go with my fear of flying and the 4 beers in my belly... -

Re: Audio Books
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 3:58 PMI get the odd book from audible.com. They aren't cheap, but then I guess they have to pay someone to read them. I put them on CD's and play them in the car. My new stereo plays MP3's so I can put a 10 hour book onto 1 CD. Once you have bought one, they come back to you with promotions and deals, which are better value.
