The Proust Challenge

A recent article in Salon suggested that it was entirely feasible, even desirable, to read all seven volumes of "In Search of Lost Time" from beginning to end in seventy days or less. I love Proust, but I tend to skip around and take long breaks when I read him, so this sounded like a good challenge to me. For all others who'd like to give it a try, I've started a new community:

I did it in about half that time (total days spent reading).... It's not too hard if you read seriously. My (very approximate) calculations are that if you read 400 wpm, you should be able to finish all of it in 35 hours. At the most, it would take about 45 hours, at that clip.

Right, but I think total immersion in one book is a little unhealthy -- especially considering the fact that I normally read a lot of books at once. I don't want to speed-read, and I want to leave room for living.

I slacked off at the beginning of Vol. II, but I'll probably finish it today.

Plus, I finally found a copy of "Sodom and Gomorrah." Imagine me, going to every bookstore in New York City, asking the clerk, "have you got Sodom and Gomorrah?.... Sodom. And. Gomorrah.... Marcel Proust... no, not that translation, the other one..." That was my week.
