Want to teach one of her novels to a class of 4th year undergraduates.

Re: Toni Morrisson - suggestions?
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 6:41 AMOh, The Bluest Eye is canonical, but it's also really freaking depressing and dreary.
Actually, I wouldn't recommend Morrison at all. For a fourth-year class, I might recommend somebody more contemporary and complex, like Nalo Hopkinson maybe.

Re: Toni Morrisson - suggestions?
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 8:58 AMIt depends on what the class is for, and how many books they will be using. Love is a great example of magic realism. I also like The Bluest Eye. Also, it depends on the university and its students. I have taught at a major international university and a smaller, regional one. At the second, students did not read much on their own, and had difficulty in the actual mechanics of reading novels, even in their fourth years. -

Re: Toni Morrisson - suggestions?
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 4:05 PMI read both Song of Solomon and Beloved as an undergrad. I have to say that Beloved stuck with me more than Song of Solomon, but both were excellent.

Thu, June 29, 2006 - 12:51 AMi am a teacher. i have taught four morrison novels, sula, beloved, jazz and tar baby. the most accessible one of the bunch is sula. it has all the punch of beloved and jazz, but with much less complexity for the uninitiated...

Re: Toni Morrisson - suggestions?
Sat, July 8, 2006 - 1:34 PMI used Song of Solomon in a seminar for the National Honors Society convention about 10 years ago, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. It is a wonderfully rich book, well-written and engaging. Despite the opinion of some, many consider Morrison both contemporary and complex. Good luck... -

Tue, October 3, 2006 - 9:18 PMmy personal favourite is jazz, but i remember having "beloved" on the reading list of a 4th year literature course in "the female gothic" that was really enjoyable. -
